In Italy during the Easter period, on Good Friday, for those who are believers, you cannot eat meat. In the evening you can participate in a small procession called the “Via Crucis” that retraces the path made by Jesus that ended with his crucifixion. And on Sunday, a special mass is had to celebrate His resurrection.
In Italian, Easter Monday is called “The Monday of the Angel” to remember the meeting between the Angel with the woman who came to Jesus’ tomb which was found empty, or “Pasquetta”, which means little Easter. There is a famous Italian proverb which says, “Spend Christmas with your parents, and Easter with whomever you want”. In fact, on Easter Monday it’s tradition to have a picnic or to eat fish with friends.
On Easter morning, the most important moment of the Easter holiday, it is tradition to break chocolate eggs and have a savory breakfast including: Easter cheese bread, cold cuts, cheeses, eggs and some desserts. For lunch we eat lamb, fried dishes, such as artichokes, or fried bread and some desserts.
The Easter holiday is very enjoyable!
I’ve always enjoyed Easter in Italy. Although I do miss our Easter Egg Hunts!! 🙂 I still paint eggs at home. Now that I will have a little boy we will hide them in the garden for him to find…when he gets old enough, of course 🙂
